Social Media Influencer Sentenced To 6 Months In Prison For Iying
On April 28, 2023, social media influencer Katie Sorensen was sentenced to 6 months in prison for fabricating a disastrous story just for the sake of views.
In a disturbing video she posted around early December 2020, the influencer assured the police and her fans that a Latino couple had tried to kidnap her kids in a parking lot in front of a craft store in Petaluma. As if that was not a lie enough, she even went on Tv to reaffirm her story and demand justice — but not only for her — but for every child and family that had fallen to “these predators”.
Not knowing this was all a lie, people believed and sympathized with her sobbing eyes. They spread the information like wildfire, and within hours, her video had hit 1 million views and surpassed 4 million by the next day. In the comment section, everybody was worried that Petaluma was under a brewing child danger. Most people advised each other on how to keep their children safe and wished her luck.
Meanwhile, as all this was happening, the investigation was also gathering pace, and to the police’s surprise, Miss Korensen had lied. Once the suspects were identified and brought in for questioning, the investigation ruled that they were an average harmless, loving couple with no previous criminal convictions, and Katie had a lot of explaining to do. With that in hand, they brought her in for questioning, and the truth came out. She had done it for views.
According to the police, once Miss Korensen noticed that her page was no longer attracting many views and not bringing in a lot of money, she thought of fabricating the story since such genuine videos gained her a lot of attraction in the past. She was found guilty and sentenced to 6 months in prison even though she and her lawyer believed she was innocent.
Concerningly “Dailymail UK” recorded that she showed no remorse as her family sobbed. The harmless couple were spared and thanked the police for doing their job correctly; not everyone is that lucky. What do you think about this case? What can be done to reduce or stop such cases from happening? I think because the love of money is the root of all evil, such things will never stop. We just need to be grateful and content with the little that we have.
